Sukhna Lake

Sukhna Lake Chandigarh

Location: Sector 6                                      Photo gallery

Sukhna Lake, the man-made lake, stands testimony to the imagination and artistic and architectural prowess of the builders of the town. The lake is an epitome of beauty and surpasses many natural lakes in terms of the peace of mind it provides.

The Vital stats of Sukhna
3 Square kilometers in area, the lake was created by obstructing the flow of the Sukhna choe, the seasonal rivulet that flows along the southeastern boundary of the city. In 1958, a three and a half kilometers long dam was constructed to give birth to unique reservoir of water. It is located in sector 6 and is right at the feet of the mountains.

 The Mornings
Morning walkers throng the lake to fill their pollution filled lungs with the cool, fresh air. The walking trail provides a great experience and people across all age groups can be seen enjoying the gentle warmth of the first ray of the Sun, sitting on the lakeside.

The Evenings
Serious joggers, tourists, merry-making families and, of course, romancing couples are all there during the evening. The ambience, the breeze, the scenic beauty, all this plus the company of your loved ones make the whole experience worthwhile. The sunset is a charming sight; especially while holding hands of the one you love.

The Attractions
Apart from the view and the cool breeze, the lake has many added attractions, keeping in mind the large number of people who come here everyday. A children’s park adorned with various swings and games, a toy train and several street performers forms the crux of the lake’s entertainment facilities. An eatery offering all sorts of food items is very popular among the visitors. Facility for boating, complete with Shikaras and peddle boats, is another major attraction. Kayaking, rafting and sail boating is also performed by those interested. An annual water sports festival is also held. Another big hit with the tourists is the island in the middle of the lake, which has a fountain and colored lights. On the other end of the lake is the Lake club, which has amazing facilities and also helps in the maintenance of the lake.

Silting and De-silting
The silt that accumulates at the bed of the lake is a big problem. The silt flows down from the nearby hills and hillocks as the trees on the hills are depleting by the day. But the commitment of the residents of the city motivates them to volunteer for the de-silting operations, and the situation is improving now.

To Conclude…
Nature has given us many gifts in the form of the beautiful hills, the flowers, the birds etc., but it won’t be an exaggeration to say that ‘Sukhna is Chandigarh’s gift back to Mother Nature!’
